Description
Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It is effective against a wide range of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Chloramphenicol is used to treat serious infections, especially in cases where other antibiotics are ineffective, and is often reserved for severe or life-threatening conditions due to potential side effects.
Uses
Severe Infections
Bacterial Meningitis: Chloramphenicol is used to treat meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, particularly in areas where resistance to other antibiotics is common.
Sepsis and Bacteremia: Effective in treating bloodstream infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms.
Respiratory Tract Infections
Treats pneumonia, acute bronchitis, and infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and other resistant respiratory pathogens.
Gastrointestinal Infections
Used to treat infections like Typhoid Fever caused by Salmonella typhi, especially in cases where resistance to other antibiotics is a concern.
Also effective for certain types of dysentery caused by Shigella species.
Eye Infections
Topical chloramphenicol is commonly used in eye ointments or drops to treat bacterial conjunctivitis and other eye infections.
Rickettsial Infections
Chloramphenicol is effective against infections caused by Rickettsia species, such as typhus and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Other Infections
Can be used to treat other serious infections such as cholera and brucellosis, particularly in areas with high levels of antibiotic resistance.
