Description
Dicyclomine is an anticholinergic medication that works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal tract. It inhibits the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that causes muscle contractions, thus reducing spasms and cramping. Dicyclomine is primarily used to manage symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other gastrointestinal disorders where muscle spasms are a problem.
Uses
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Dicyclomine is most commonly prescribed for managing the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), especially abdominal pain, cramping, and bloating.
It helps reduce smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal tract, providing relief from discomfort caused by excessive muscle contractions.
01
Gastrointestinal Spasms
Used to treat acute gastrointestinal spasms caused by various conditions such as gastroenteritis, gallbladder disease, or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Provides relief from painful cramping and abdominal discomfort caused by spasms.
02
Preoperative Use
Dicyclomine is sometimes used before surgery to reduce gastrointestinal motility and prevent gastric spasms, which can interfere with surgical procedures or post-operative recovery.
03
Bladder Spasms
In some cases, dicyclomine is used off-label to treat bladder spasms, particularly in patients with overactive bladder or after certain types of surgeries, where it helps reduce urinary urgency and discomfort.
04
Other Smooth Muscle Disorders
Occasionally prescribed off-label for other conditions that involve excessive smooth muscle contraction, such as certain types of urinary incontinence, providing relief from muscle spasms and pain.
05
