Indications
Ménière's Disease
Betahistine is commonly prescribed to reduce the frequency and severity of vertigo, dizziness, and tinnitus associated with Ménière's disease. It helps in improving inner ear blood flow, which in turn aids in stabilizing balance and reducing the feeling of fullness in the ear. This leads to significant improvements in quality of life for individuals suffering from this condition.
Vestibular Vertigo
Betahistine is effective in treating vertigo and balance disorders originating from the vestibular system. Vestibular vertigo includes episodes of dizziness and imbalance, often related to diseases of the inner ear. Betahistine works by improving circulation within the inner ear, providing relief from the disruptive symptoms of vertigo.
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Though more commonly treated with other methods, Betahistine may be used as part of a therapeutic regimen to manage the symptoms of BPPV. BPPV is characterized by episodes of vertigo triggered by specific head movements due to the displacement of calcium crystals in the inner ear. Betahistine helps to relieve the dizziness associated with this condition.
Labyrinthitis
Betahistine may be used to treat labyrinthitis, an inner ear infection that can cause dizziness, hearing loss, and imbalance. The drug helps reduce the severity of vertigo and dizziness that typically accompanies this condition.
Dizziness and Imbalance in Older Adults
Age-related vestibular disorders can cause dizziness and balance difficulties. Betahistine is often prescribed to improve vestibular function and reduce symptoms of vertigo in elderly patients, thus helping maintain mobility and reducing the risk of falls.
Tinnitus
Betahistine has been shown to reduce the perception of tinnitus (ringing in the ears) in patients with vestibular disorders, particularly in those suffering from Ménière's disease. While it may not completely eliminate tinnitus, it helps to make the symptoms more manageable by improving ear function and blood circulation.
Post-surgery or Post-trauma Dizziness
Betahistine may also be used to alleviate dizziness and balance issues that arise after surgical procedures affecting the ear or head trauma. It helps in restoring normal vestibular function and improving the patient's ability to manage balance post-surgery.
